The riots and attack on the nation’s Capital that took place on January 6th were disgraceful. The attempt my some strong supporters of President Trump to undermine the responsibility of congress is a direct attack on our democracy and cannot be tolerated. Add to this the reality that it was the President of the United States that incited these riots by his actions and inactions the past four years and we can get a good idea of what President Trump means by “Make America Great Again”. Sorry. If this is greatness then count me among the many that would rather do without it.

The mob surrounded the U.S. Capitol and legislatures who were gathered to fulfill their constitutional duties were held captive. The mob carried Confederate flags, a symbol of white supremacy and a symbol that brings back memories for many of another sad and divisive moment in American history. Many watched with horror as guns were drawn in the chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives. The image of a protester sitting in Nancy Pelosi’s desk will be forever remembered. At least by me.

Let me be clear. What we have witnessed is contrary to everything our country stands for and is a danger to the constitutional order of this country. It also is contrary to Catholic and Christian teaching. This attempt to disrupt and destroy the democratic process should be denounced by all Americans, all Catholics, in every possible way.

This is especially true for any supporters of President Trump. It is simply not acceptable for anyone to condone the actions that took place and not speak out against it. Yes, there have been riots in our cities organized by Antifa and Black Lives Matter and other groups of the left that have been destructive. All protests that are not peaceful should be condemned and not tolerated. But, when the center of democracy is overtaken with the encouragement and inaction of the President of the United States one has to say enough.

For more than four years President Trump has waged a campaign of division, feeding into the fears and prejudices of others for his own personal gain. During his four years the president had quite a few supporters within the Republican Party and the media who ignored his divisive behavior and rhetoric. They bear some responsibility for the events that took place. Let’s face it. The right-wing extremists and white supremacists who stormed the capital were responding to years of overt encouragement from the President and his closest supporters. The physical assault on the nation’s seat of government is no small thing. And it was not a onetime event. In my opinion and that of many others it is a logical extension of the message that President Trump has long been telling his supporters namely that American democracy is a fraud, that his opponents are traitors and that his allies need to fight back.

Let me be clear again. All protests, whether on the extreme left or the extreme right that are not peaceful must be clearly condemned by all. To not do so is to be complicit in the actions that we witnessed all over social and the news media. This is especially true for the President of the United States. His failure to clearly speak out against these actions is a disgrace.

I admit that I am angry at what happened. We all should be. But, I am not surprised. There is no question that this is what terrorism looks like and nothing can justify it. It is a national disgrace. If those storming the Capitol were people of color, Antifa or Black Lives Matter you can be sure there would have been beatings, tear gas used and many arrests. Those who broke the law would have been dealt with. The lack of a federal response not only put the DC Capital police in great danger but undermined our democracy. All this is a clear sign of some deep-seated white supremacy that still exists in the hearts of some Americans.

As former President Obama said: “History will rightly remember today’s violence at the Capitol, incited by a sitting president who has continued to baselessly lie about the outcome of a lawful election, as a moment of great dishonor and shame for our nation”.

As I stated before, I do not believe that Trump is solely responsible for what happened. We must always remember that we can all be guilty of the sin of omission. In other words we are not only responsible for actions we take but are also responsible for those things we do not do when we should have done something. If we do not speak out against the evil and sinfulness that is clearly seen we are complicit. To not try and prevent and denounce the evil that we witnessed clearly and uncompromisingly, we participate in that evil. Silence in this case is wrong. It is my hope that all political and religious leaders will speak out against the evil we all witnessed in our Capitol. It is not a time for cowardly silence.

As a nation I think we have to ask ourselves: Will we strive to be a nation of liberty and justice for all? Or will we let the vocal minority guide us into the future? Will we seek justice and liberty only for those who are white and angry? For those who look like and pray like us? Until we face those questions, we can’t be surprised by the horror that we saw at the Capitol today. As Cardinal Cupich said: “What has been unfolding at the Capitol today should shock the conscience of any patriotic American and any faithful Catholic. The eyes of the world look on in horror as we suffer this national disgrace”.

I do remain hopeful. It is good to see today a number of Republicans speak up forcefully against the actions and inactions of the President. It is good to see at least some of our religious leaders do the same. It is good to see Congress was able to ratify the election despite all that happened. It is good to see that the election officials in Georgia refused to be intimidated by a bully president. It is time as a nation to speak out against the injustices that happen and to begin to once again be a country that is respected globally. May the healing process begin so that all can work together for the betterment of all throughout the entire world. Let us pray for the future of our great country.

Los disturbios y el ataque a la capital de la nación que tuvo lugar el 6 de enero fueron vergonzosos. El intento de algunos fuertes partidarios del presidente Trump de socavar la responsabilidad del Congreso es un ataque directo a nuestra democracia y no se puede tolerar. Agregue a esto la realidad de que fue el presidente de los Estados Unidos el que provocó estos disturbios con sus acciones e inacciones en los últimos cuatro años y podemos tener una buena idea de lo que el presidente Trump quiere decir con “Hacer que America vuelva a ser grande”. Lo siento. Si esto es grandeza, cuénteme entre los muchos que preferirían prescindir de ella.

Los alborotadores rodeó el Capitolio de los Estados Unidos y las legislaturas que se reunieron para cumplir con sus deberes constitucionales se mantuvieron cautivas. Los alborotadores llevaba banderas confederadas, un símbolo de la supremacía blanca y un símbolo que les trae recuerdos a muchos de otro momento triste y divisivo en la historia de Estados Unidos. Muchos vieron con horror cómo se desenfundaban armas en la Cámara de Representantes de Estados Unidos. La imagen de un manifestante sentado en el escritorio de Nancy Pelosi será recordada para siempre. Al menos por mí.

Déjame ser claro. Lo que hemos presenciado es contrario a todo lo que defiende nuestro país y es un peligro para el orden constitucional de este país. También es contrario a la enseñanza católica y cristiana. Este intento de interrumpir y destruir el proceso democrático debe ser denunciado por todos los estadounidenses, todos los católicos, de todas las formas posibles.

Esto es especialmente cierto para los partidarios del presidente Trump. Simplemente no es aceptable que nadie apruebe las acciones que tuvieron lugar y no se pronuncie en contra de ellas. Sí, ha habido disturbios en nuestras ciudades organizados por Antifa y Black Lives Matter y otros grupos de izquierda que han sido destructivos. Todas las protestas que no sean pacíficas deben ser condenadas y no toleradas. Pero, cuando el centro de la democracia se ve superado por el aliento y la inacción del presidente de los Estados Unidos, hay que decir basta.

Durante más de cuatro años, el presidente Trump ha librado una campaña de división, alimentando los miedos y prejuicios de otros para su propio beneficio personal. Durante sus cuatro años, el presidente tuvo bastantes partidarios dentro del Partido Republicano y los medios de comunicación que ignoraron su comportamiento divisivo y su retórica. Tienen cierta responsabilidad por los hechos ocurridos.

Seamos sinceros. Los extremistas de derecha y los supremacistas blancos que irrumpieron en la capital estaban respondiendo a años de aliento abierto por parte del presidente y sus seguidores más cercanos. El asalto físico a la sede del gobierno de la nación no es poca cosa. Y no fue un evento único. En mi opinión y en la de muchos otros, es una extensión lógica del mensaje que el presidente Trump ha estado diciendo durante mucho tiempo a sus partidarios, a saber, que la democracia estadounidense es un fraude, que sus oponentes son traidores y que sus aliados deben defenderse.
Déjame ser claro de nuevo. Todas las protestas, ya sean de extrema izquierda o de extrema derecha que no sean pacíficas, deben ser claramente condenadas por todos. No hacerlo es ser cómplice de las acciones que presenciamos en las redes sociales y los medios de comunicación. Esto es especialmente cierto para el presidente de los Estados Unidos. Su incapacidad para hablar claramente en contra de estas acciones es una vergüenza.

Admito que estoy enojado por lo que pasó. Todos deberíamos estarlo. Pero no me sorprende. No hay duda de que así es el terrorismo y nada puede justificarlo. Es una desgracia nacional. Si quienes asaltaron el Capitolio fueran personas de color, Antifa o Black Lives Matter, puede estar seguro de que habría habido palizas, uso de gas lacrimógeno y muchos arrestos. Aquellos que violaron la ley habrían sido tratados. La falta de una respuesta federal no solo puso en gran peligro a la policía de DC Capital, sino que socavó nuestra democracia. Todo esto es una clara señal de una supremacía blanca profundamente arraigada que todavía existe en los corazones de algunos estadounidenses.
Como dijo el ex presidente Obama: “La historia recordará con razón la violencia de hoy en el Capitolio, incitada por un presidente en funciones que ha seguido mintiendo sin fundamento sobre el resultado de una elección legal, como un momento de gran deshonra y vergüenza para nuestra nación”.

Como dije antes, no creo que Trump sea el único responsable de lo sucedido. Siempre debemos recordar que todos podemos ser culpables del pecado de omisión. En otras palabras, no solo somos responsables de las acciones que tomamos, sino que también somos responsables de las cosas que no hacemos cuando deberíamos haber hecho algo. Si no hablamos en contra de la maldad y la pecaminosidad que se ve claramente, somos cómplices. Para no intentar prevenir y denunciar el mal que presenciamos de forma clara e intransigente, participamos de ese mal. El silencio en este caso está mal. Tengo la esperanza de que todos los líderes políticos y religiosos se pronuncien contra el mal que todos presenciamos en nuestro Capital. No es momento de un cobarde silencio.

Como nación, creo que tenemos que preguntarnos: ¿Nos esforzaremos por ser una nación de libertad y justicia para todos? ¿O dejaremos que la minoría vocal nos guíe hacia el futuro? ¿Buscaremos justicia y libertad solo para los blancos y enojados? ¿Para aquellos que se parecen y rezan como nosotros? Hasta que enfrentemos esas preguntas, no podemos sorprendernos por el horror que vimos hoy en el Capitolio. Como dijo el cardenal Cupich: “Lo que se ha estado desarrollando en el Capital hoy debería conmocionar la conciencia de cualquier estadounidense patriota y católico fiel. Los ojos del mundo miran con horror cómo sufrimos esta desgracia nacional”.

Sigo esperanzado. Es bueno ver hoy a varios republicanos hablar enérgicamente contra las acciones e inacciones del presidente. Es bueno ver que al menos algunos de nuestros líderes religiosos hacen lo mismo. Es bueno ver que el Congreso pudo ratificar las elecciones a pesar de todo lo sucedido. Es bueno ver que los funcionarios electorales de Georgia se negaron a dejarse intimidar por un presidente abusivo. Es hora de que, como nación, hablemos en contra de las injusticias que ocurren y de comenzar a ser una vez más un país respetado a nivel mundial. Que comience el proceso de curación para que todos puedan trabajar juntos para el mejoramiento de todos en todo el mundo. Oremos por el futuro de nuestro gran país.
