Moving Forward

Now that our elections are over I would like to share a few thoughts as to where we go from here.  The past five years have been some of the most tumultuous years in our recent political history.  These past few days after Election Day have been extraordinary.  The divisiveness in our country was evident in the election itself and has manifested itself in many ways after Election Day.  The protests that gripped our country, the claim of vote tampering, accusations of stealing the election, a President’s refusal to concede, the lawsuits and other baseless claims all have made this election unique. 

In this article I would like to take a look at how we got to where we are today.  It is always good to look at and understand the past.  By doing so, we can get a better idea of how to move forward.  I then would like to share some thoughts as to where we need to go and how we as a nation can become great again. 

This reflection is of course my own personal opinion and I am sure there are those who disagree.  It is based on my Catholic beliefs and my understanding of the political situation over the past five years.  

How We Got Here

Donald Trump won the Presidency in 2016 for a number of reasons.   Perhaps the greatest was his ability and that of the Republican Party to mobilize evangelical conservative Christians (the religious right) to support his agenda.   His call to “Make America Great Again” and to restore family values fed right into the agenda of many evangelical conservatives who bought into his promises to “build the wall,” arrest and deport undocumented immigrants, to do away with the Dream Act and most importantly protect religious freedom.  

A few years before he decided to run, Donald Trump’s public stance also went from being pro-abortion to anti-abortion.   This also was embraced by the evangelical conservative Christians and made him more attractive to many leaders of large evangelical churches.  In fact, Donald Trump, a philandering,  biblically illiterate candidate from New York City won 81% of the white evangelical vote four years ago. 

He also attracted conservative Catholics since the Churches’ stance has always been anti-abortion.   This was another factor that helped Trump win the Presidency and critical battleground states in 2016.  Despite losing the popular vote by 2.8 million votes, Trump was elected President because he won traditionally Democratic Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin and won the electoral vote by 77 votes.  These are all states where Catholics outnumber evangelicals by significant margins.    It is noteworthy that these states flipped back to the Democrats in the 2020 Presidential election.  This change was instrumental in getting Biden elected. 

White evangelicals and conservative Catholics have similar positions on many issues.  They have a strong opposition to abortion and are strong advocates for religious liberty.  Trump emphasized his support of these issues and in fact was able to win over a significant Catholic vote in these states in 2016 despite the differences in regard to many other Catholic issues such as affordable health care and the treatment of the undocumented, the death penalty and the environment. 

Fox news, which launched in 1996, transformed the news media internationally and here in the United States.   Fox cable news network was created by Rupert Murdoch with the intent of creating a news agency that would appeal to the growing conservative audience in the United States.   It was created to offer an alternative to CBS, NBC and ABC.  He hired Roger Ailes to be the founding CEO.

There is no question that the intent of Fox news right from the beginning was to offer biased reporting in favor of the Republican Party by emphasizing conservative causes while at the same time portraying the Democratic Party in a negative light.   Ailes and Murdoch fell in love with Donald Trump and when he was preparing to run in 2016 there was a pronounced tendency of the Fox News Channel to serve as a mouthpiece for the administration and provide propaganda for the Trump election campaign.   The relationship between Fox news and the Trump administration had been so close that respected news anchor Dan Rather stated: “This is the closest we have come to having state-run media.”

To be fair, when Fox news went on the air in 1996 there was unquestionably a liberal bias in the major media networks.  It was not a huge one but it was pretty consistent.  So when Fox news was born it had profound political implications since many conservatives only listened to news or opinions that were vetted through Fox.  They believed what they heard as if it was the gospel truth.  Fox news gave them a station that backed their beliefs. 

The popular “O’Reilly Factor” which began the first day the network launched with its byline “Caution, you are about to enter the No Spin Zone” became the most popular show for many conservatives in the United States.  As its popularity began to grow it became more and more biased and fed the people who watched what they wanted to hear rather than the facts. 

People either bought into Fox network’s biased, conservative approach to reporting the news or they were turned off by it.   The split in the American people began to take shape.  In the midst of this, Fox news did what it has always done – it continued to be an advocate for Trump while dishonestly criticizing his political opponents.                          

This was clearly seen right after the first debate this year.   Fox turned the news reporting over to its chief propagandist and Donald Trump puppet – Sean Hannity.  Sean Hannity described Biden as extremely weak, frail and confused.  In his live stated opinion “Joe Biden just got steamrolled by President Trump.”    This is in stark contrast to what viewers believed took place.   In fact, numerous polls showed that watchers thought that Biden beat Trump in the debate with 60% saying Biden won compared to 28% saying Trump won.   Furthermore, the majority of viewers felt Trump was a bully and this tactic no longer was viewed as appealing even to his followers.   This further advanced the split in the American people. 

 No question Fox news played a big role in getting Donald Trump elected in 2016.   However, even devotees of Fox news found its reporting on the debate as biased and recognized it for what it was.   They also began to understand the agenda of the network and its approach of advocating for Trump while dishonestly criticizing anyone who disagrees with him.  Trump’s bullying approach which helped to get him elected in 2016 and the support Fox news gave it no longer was acceptable even to some people in Trump’s camp.  

So, the tide changed.   Enough Americans began to pay attention to the facts rather than the spin.   The fact is Hillary Clinton was not locked up.  Obamacare wasn’t repealed.  The deficit skyrocketed.  And, instead of being “great again” America is the epicenter of a global pandemic.   Enough Americans recognized the irresponsible actions of Donald Trump at his rallies where 30,000 people contracted Covid  and 700 died after attending 18 of this rallies according to a Stanford study.  

Further analysis will have to be done to determine why Trump lost the election.  However, it seems people woke up and saw Donald Trump for who he is and Fox news for what it is.   Preliminary analysis of the recent election of President-elect Joe Biden shows that Evangelical Christians did not support him to the extent they did in 2016.  Conservative Catholics did not support him as much either.   In fact, according to early reports the Catholic vote was split.  Women supported him but not as much as they did in 2016.  In regards to minorities, the exit polls are mixed but Trump seems to have done better among blacks and Hispanics than he did in 2016.   The common reasons given at exit polls for not voting for Trump were his lack of credibility, his blatant lying.   His statement that the coronavirus will be gone a few weeks after the election and that a vaccine is just around the corner were seen for what they were – baseless.  Pope Francis recently called Trump’s family separation border policy “cruelty of the highest form”.  His treatment of women, the undocumented and his racist statements that caused civil unrest in many parts of the country were no longer seen as acceptable behavior despite his limited accomplishments. 

Where do we go from here?

The nation needs healing.    I was young in the 60’s when the Vietnam War protests were happening.   The cultural awakening of Woodstock and the civil rights movement in the 60’s all added to a lot of divisiveness and unrest here in the United States.   It would be difficult for me to compare since I was only a kid in the 60’s but I would say that the racial tension, the political divisiveness and the cultural change taking place in our society today is just as real. The polarization, sectarianism and widespread distrust will need to be addressed.  The Biden administration will have to make every effort to bring the country together and restore some level of credibility for the United States in the global world.   There are a few things that can be done to make some progress along these lines. 

First and foremost President elect Biden and his administration will have to always remember that the job of the President is to put the people first.  At times this will mean that they will have to set their own political agenda aside and consider the interest of the majority or what is best for the world.   People on both sides of the aisle are sick of the political infighting and the digging in of heels that has given politicians a bad name.   They will have to see to it that all life is respected – the unborn, the undocumented, women, LBGTQ, those on death row, the incarcerated, those will no medical insurance and the poor.   They will have to see to it that all people are respected regardless of their religious background, race or sexual identity. 

All people belong to our society and no one should be shut out.  All need to be listened to.   All religions must be respected.   As Catholics, we should remember that there was a time when we were not considered to be “real” Americans.   It was assumed we had dual loyalties, with our greater allegiance being to the pope.

Honest and open dialogue will be important.  Americans are sick of the political infighting, the partisan divide and unwillingness of both sides to cooperate to do what is best for all, especially the most vulnerable among us.   Being a politician at one time was a noble career.  This has been lost in many ways.   Politics needs to become a noble profession once again and this can be done if politicians, news stations and the media put aside all posturing, marketing and media spin and speak the truth.  These sow nothing but division, conflict and cynicism

Second, we need to once again dialogue and cooperate with other nations in a respectful way.   This may mean that we as a nation may not always get what we want.  Sometimes working for the common good of all means that we have to set aside some of our desires. 

We need to once again participate in the United Nations and other forums of dialog with other nations.  The Trump administration pulled back on our participation and support of this great institution of cooperation that was created after World War II.  The shift in the U.S. global outlook under the Trump administration created a new normal in US foreign policy that has never been seen before in our country.   Since its creation in 1945 all presidential administrations have supported the United Nations until President Trump was elected.   They recognized that being a member advanced US power because it protected its interests.  The Trump administration took a more nationalist and unpredictable approach to foreign policy with greater emphasis on sovereignty and reduced focus on alliances. 

This is simply not the way forward.   Isolationism does not work.  Cooperation and working toward the greater good does.   We live in a global society.  We need to cooperate with other nations and understand that cooperation does not make us weak.  It makes us strong.  Our lack of cooperation with other nations has hurt our reputation.  Having traveled to many countries in the past five years I can say the Trump administration has given new meaning to the phrase “the ugly American.”  Dialogue is the way forward.  

Third, President elect Biden will have to respect all people as he goes about the enormous task of uniting the nation.  He has shown that he can dialogue openly and respectfully with others.  He has the ability to be empathetic.  This is so needed in a leader today.   He is a product of Irish-American Catholicism: emotional and open, mournful and loving.   Family comes first for him and he will need to put all these skills into use to heal the nation and bring about the needed change so many desire. 

Telling the truth, especially in times of crisis, is the only way forward.   Kids learn at a young age that lying never works.   The lies always come back to haunt you.   The Coronavirus continues to be deadly.  It is not just going to “go away in a few weeks.”    Our nation’s economy is not going to get better soon.  People need help now.  Mexico did not and will not pay for the wall.  We need our leaders to speak honestly even if the message they have to deliver is not a popular one.  

As a nation we have always been resilient and can handle the challenges ahead if we dialogue and cooperate with other nations.   We can become great again if we seek the common good rather than what is best for ourselves.  This is what will make America great again. 

May God bless our wonderful country and may the healing and spirit of cooperation begin.

Ahora que nuestras elecciones han terminado, me gustaría compartir algunas ideas sobre hacia dónde vamos desde aquí. Los últimos cinco años han sido algunos de los más tumultuosos de nuestra historia política reciente. Estos últimos días después del día de las elecciones han sido extraordinarios.  La división en nuestro país fue evidente en la elección y se ha manifestado de muchas maneras después del día de las elecciones.  Las protestas que se apoderaron de nuestro país, el reclamo de manipulación de votos, las acusaciones de robar la elección, la negativa de un presidente a ceder, las demandas y otras afirmaciones infundadas han hecho que esta elección sea única.

En este artículo me gustaría echar un vistazo a cómo llegamos a donde estamos hoy. Siempre es bueno mirar y comprender el pasado.  Al hacerlo, podemos tener una mejor idea de cómo avanzar.  Luego me gustaría compartir algunas ideas sobre a dónde debemos ir y cómo nosotros, como nación, podemos volver a ser grandes nuevamente.

Esta reflexión es, por supuesto, mi opinión personal y estoy seguro de que hay quienes no están de acuerdo.  Se basa en mis creencias católicas y en mi comprensión de la situación política durante los últimos cinco años.

Cómo llegamos aquí

Donald Trump ganó la presidencia en 2016 por varias razones.  Quizás la mayor fue su capacidad y la del Partido Republicano para movilizar a los cristianos conservadores evangélicos (la derecha religiosa) para apoyar su agenda.  Su llamado a “Hacer que Estados Unidos vuelva a ser grande” y restaurar los valores familiares se incorporó directamente a la agenda de muchos conservadores evangélicos que aceptaron sus promesas de “construir el muro”, arrestar y deportar a inmigrantes indocumentados, acabar con la “Dream Act” y proteger de manera importante la libertad religiosa.

Unos años antes de que decidiera postularse, la postura pública de Donald Trump también pasó de ser pro-aborto a anti-aborto.  Esto también fue aceptado por los cristianos conservadores evangélicos y lo hizo más atractivo para muchos líderes de grandes iglesias evangélicas.  De hecho, Donald Trump, un candidato mujeriego y analfabeto bíblico de la ciudad de Nueva York ganó el 81% del voto evangélico blanco hace cuatro años.

El popular “Factor O’Reilly”, que comenzó el primer día que se lanzó la cadena con su lema “Precaución, está a punto de entrar en la Zona de Prohibido Spin”, se convirtió en el programa más popular para muchos conservadores en los Estados Unidos.  A medida que su popularidad comenzó a crecer, se volvió cada vez más parcial y alimentó a las personas que vieron lo que querían escuchar en lugar de los hechos.

La gente se compró con el enfoque conservador y sesgado de la cadena Fox para informar las noticias o se desanimó.  La división en el pueblo de los Estados Unidos comenzó a tomar forma.   En medio de esto, Fox News hizo lo que siempre ha hecho: continuó siendo un defensor de Trump mientras criticaba deshonestamente a sus oponentes políticos.

Esto se vio claramente justo después del primer debate de este año.  Fox entregó las noticias a su principal propagandista y títere de Donald Trump: Sean Hannity.  Sean Hannity describió a Biden como extremadamente débil, frágil y confundido.  En su opinión expresada en vivo, “Joe Biden acaba de ser aplastado por el presidente Trump”.  Esto está en marcado contraste con lo que los espectadores creían que sucedió.  De hecho, numerosas encuestas mostraron que los observadores pensaban que Biden venció a Trump en el debate con un 60% diciendo que Biden ganó en comparación con el 28% que dijo que Trump ganó. Además, la mayoría de los espectadores sintieron que Trump era un matón y esta táctica ya no se consideraba atractiva ni siquiera para sus seguidores.  Esto hizo avanzar aún más la división en el pueblo de los Estados Unidos.

No hay duda de que Fox News jugó un papel importante en la elección de Donald Trump en 2016.  Sin embargo, incluso los devotos de Fox News encontraron que sus informes sobre el debate eran tendenciosos y lo reconocieron por lo que era.  También comenzaron a comprender la agenda de la red y su enfoque de defender a Trump mientras criticaban deshonestamente a cualquiera que no esté de acuerdo con él.  El enfoque de intimidación de Trump que ayudó a que fuera elegido en 2016 y el apoyo que le dio Fox News ya no era aceptable incluso para algunas personas en el campo de Trump.

Y, en lugar de ser “grande otra vez”, Estados Unidos es el epicentro de una pandemia global.  Suficientes estadounidenses reconocieron las acciones irresponsables de Donald Trump en sus mítines donde 30,000 personas contrajeron Covid y 700 murieron luego de asistir a 18 de estos mítines según un estudio de Stanford.

Será necesario realizar más análisis para determinar por qué Trump perdió las elecciones.  Sin embargo, parece que la gente se despertó y vio a Donald Trump por lo que es y a Fox News por lo que es.  El análisis preliminar de la reciente elección del presidente electo Joe Biden muestra que los cristianos evangélicos no lo apoyaron tanto como lo hicieron en 2016.  Los católicos conservadores tampoco lo apoyaron tanto.  De hecho, según los primeros informes, el voto católico estaba dividido.  Las mujeres lo apoyaron, pero no tanto como lo hicieron en 2016.  En lo que respecta a las minorías, las encuestas a boca de urna son mixtas, pero Trump parece haber tenido mejores resultados entre los negros y los hispanos que en 2016.  Las razones comunes dadas en las entrevistas después de la votación para no votar para Trump fueron su falta de credibilidad, su descarada mentira.  Su declaración de que el coronavirus desaparecerá unas semanas después de las elecciones y que una vacuna está a la vuelta de la esquina fue vista por lo que eran: sin fundamento.  El Papa Francisco recientemente llamó a la política fronteriza de separación familiar de Trump “crueldad de la forma más alta”.  Su trato a las mujeres, los indocumentados y sus declaraciones racistas que causaron disturbios civiles en muchas partes del país ya no se consideraron un comportamiento aceptable a pesar de sus limitados logros.

¿A dónde vamos desde aquí?

La nación necesita curación.  Yo era joven en los años 60 cuando ocurrían las protestas contra la guerra de Vietnam.  El despertar cultural de Woodstock y el movimiento de derechos civiles en los años 60 se sumaron a mucha división y malestar aquí en los Estados Unidos.  Sería difícil para mí comparar ya que yo era solo un niño en los años 60, pero diría que la tensión racial, la división política y el cambio cultural que está ocurriendo en nuestra sociedad hoy es tan real.  Será necesario abordar la polarización, el sectarismo y la desconfianza generalizada.  La administración Biden tendrá que hacer todo lo posible para unir al país y restaurar cierto nivel de credibilidad para Estados Unidos en el mundo global.  Hay algunas cosas que se pueden hacer para avanzar en este sentido.

En primer lugar, el presidente-electo Biden y su administración tendrán que recordar siempre que el trabajo del presidente es anteponer a las personas.  A veces esto significará que tendrán que dejar de lado su propia agenda política y considerar el interés de la mayoría o lo que es mejor para el mundo. La gente de ambos lados del pasillo está harta de las luchas políticas internas y de los tacones que han dado mala fama a los políticos.  Tendrán que asegurarse de que se respete toda la vida: los no nacidos, los indocumentados, las mujeres, LBGTQ, los que están en el corredor de la muerte, los encarcelados, los que no tienen seguro médico y los pobres. Tendrán que asegurarse de que todas las personas sean respetadas independientemente de su origen religioso, raza o identidad sexual.

Todas las personas pertenecen a nuestra sociedad y nadie debe ser excluido. Todos necesitan ser escuchados.  Todas las religiones deben ser respetadas.  Como católicos, debemos recordar que hubo un tiempo en el que no se nos consideraba estadounidenses “reales”, que se asumía que teníamos lealtades duales, siendo nuestra mayor lealtad al Papa.

El diálogo honesto y abierto será importante.  Los estadounidenses están hartos de las luchas políticas internas, la división partidista y la falta de voluntad de ambas partes para cooperar para hacer lo que es mejor para todos, especialmente para los más vulnerables entre nosotros. Ser político en un momento fue una carrera noble.  Esto se ha perdido de muchas formas.  La política debe convertirse en una profesión noble una vez más y esto se puede hacer si los políticos, las estaciones de noticias y los medios de comunicación dejan de lado todas las posturas, el marketing y los medios de comunicación y dicen la verdad.  Estos no siembran más que división, conflicto y cinismo.

En segundo lugar, debemos volver a dialogar y cooperar con otras naciones de manera respetuosa.  Esto puede significar que nosotros, como nación, no siempre consigamos lo que queremos.  A veces, trabajar por el bien común de todos significa que tenemos que dejar de lado algunos de nuestros deseos.

Necesitamos participar una vez más en las Naciones Unidas y otros foros de diálogo con otras naciones.  La administración Trump retiró nuestra participación y apoyo a esta gran institución de cooperación que se creó después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.  El cambio en la perspectiva global de Estados Unidos bajo la administración Trump creó una nueva normalidad en la política exterior estadounidense que nunca antes se había visto en nuestro país.  Desde su creación en 1945, todas las administraciones presidenciales han apoyado a las Naciones Unidas hasta que el presidente Trump fue elegido.  Reconocieron que ser miembro avanzaba en el poder de Estados Unidos porque protegía sus intereses.  La administración Trump adoptó un enfoque más nacionalista e impredecible de la política exterior con un mayor énfasis en la soberanía y un enfoque reducido en las alianzas.

Este simplemente no es el camino a seguir.  El aislacionismo no funciona.  La cooperación y el trabajo por un bien mayor sí lo hacen.  Vivimos en una sociedad global.  Necesitamos cooperar con otras naciones y entender que la cooperación no nos debilita.  Nos hace fuertes.  Nuestra falta de cooperación con otras naciones ha dañado nuestra reputación.  Habiendo viajado a muchos países en los últimos cinco años, puedo decir que la administración Trump le ha dado un nuevo significado a la frase “el estadounidense feo”.  El diálogo es el camino a seguir.

En tercer lugar, el presidente-electo Biden tendrá que respetar a todas las personas en la enorme tarea de unir a la nación.  Ha demostrado que puede dialogar de forma abierta y respetuosa con los demás.  Tiene la capacidad de ser empático.  Esto es tan necesario en un líder hoy.  Es un producto del catolicismo irlandés-estadounidense: emocional y abierto, triste y amoroso.  La familia es lo primero para él y tendrá que poner en práctica todas estas habilidades para sanar a la nación y lograr el cambio necesario que tantos desean.

Decir la verdad, especialmente en tiempos de crisis, es la única forma de avanzar.  Los niños aprenden a una edad temprana que mentir nunca funciona. Las mentiras siempre vuelven para perseguirte. El coronavirus sigue siendo mortal.  No se trata simplemente de “desaparecer en unas pocas semanas”.  La economía de nuestra nación no va a mejorar pronto . La gente necesita ayuda ahora.  México no pagó y no pagará por el muro.  Necesitamos que nuestros líderes hablen con honestidad incluso si el mensaje que tienen que transmitir no es popular.

Como nación, siempre hemos sido resistentes y podemos enfrentar los desafíos que tenemos por delante si dialogamos y cooperamos con otras naciones.  Podemos volvernos grandes de nuevo si buscamos el bien común en lugar de lo que es mejor para nosotros.  Esto es lo que hará que Estados Unidos vuelva a ser grande.

Que Dios bendiga a nuestro maravilloso país y que comience la sanación y el espíritu de cooperación.
